Liquid penetrant testing is primarily used for locating cracks and other defects that are open to the surface in non-magnetic materials but mat also be used in magnetic materials.

The basic mediums of test are solvent removable and water washable. Both mediums can be either visible dye or fluorescent dye penetrant.

It is typically used on non ferrous materials (aluminum or austinetic stainless steel)
